BUILDER 100: The 2017 List
2016 was a big year for the country’s biggest home builders.
This year’s BUILDER 100 list is a testament to the success of U.S. builders last year, with many companies reporting hundreds and even thousands more closings in 2016 than the year before. For instance, No. 2 builder Lennar and No. 3 PulteGroup respectively closed 2,271 and 2,824 more houses in 2016 than in 2015.
In fact, all of the top 10 firms sold more homes year over year. The rankings of these 10 mega builders remained the same as last year except that Taylor Morrison moved up a notch to No. 7, pushing Meritage into the No. 8 position.
In addition to the list’s 22 publicly traded companies, the Builder 100 is populated by a wide range of building firms, from affordable housing non-profits to multifamily builders to companies selling entry-level, move-up, and luxury single-family homes. It was harder than ever before to gain entry to the list, with the threshold moving from 365 closings in 2015 to 403 closings last year. Nevertheless, a few hard-working companies were able to jump onto the Builder 100 list for the first time.
See below for a breakdown of the home builders that entered the Top 100, along with their 2016 closings:
