Selecting the Right Architect

September 14, 2002

Whether you are an individual building your own home or a homebuilder in the business, there are certain considerations that will apply to choosing the right designer or architect for you. First, choose an established architectural firm with sound references and a large clientele. Call their references. Look at model homes they have designed. Ask for brochures and literature. Find out if they have ever won any awards or if their work has ever been published on a national level. Don't be shy in this area. Do your homework and find the professional that has a proven track record and is well recognized throughout the building industry.

Second, find one that has experience in market research and design trends. Remember that market trends will always be directly proportional to the buyers’ desires. For instance, today’s homebuyers want open kitchens. More and more want one great room as opposed to a formal living and separate family. In two-story plans, we find downstairs master bedrooms most popular with move-up buyers. Half walls that define space yet encourage a feeling of openness, fewer hallways, high ceilings with airy lofts, and lots of windows are becoming standard in all price ranges. A designer who understands and analyzes market trends can combine that information with your personal lifestyle or customer profile to create a plan that is unique and exciting... a place that you will be proud to call your "home".

Is cost a factor? Make sure the architectural firm you choose is aware of how design can affect your construction costs. Designers that have experience working directly with builders and who employ staff with a construction background are equipped to give attention to mechanical or structural details where costs can be contained. Whether you are building entry-level, move-up, or luxury, let your architect know what your budget is. Work with the architect to prioritize your wish list. A good designer can provide economical solutions where compromises are needed, without sacrificing your individuality.

Finally, you deserve great customer service. Choose a firm that has a large drafting department to accommodate your project and your schedule. You should feel confident that your project is being handled with care; and that your concerns, comments, and questions are heard by your designer.

The construction process begins with the design. Consider carefully, the drawings you will be working with and who is going to back them up. When choosing your architect, remember that the right combination of service, great design and cost effective architectural planning will result in more square footage, flexibility, and overall refinement per dollar.
